Almost a year ago Victor Pope Jr. announced he had been cast as the lead of Disney’s new production “Cadet Kel”. If you’re a 90’s baby like me, you probably still remember the classic original “Cadet Kelly” starring Hilary Duff. I’ve been a fan of Victor since his Vine days ,and his Instagram posts regarding his big break made me feel like a proud dad seeing his only son that made it.

Wow! My roommates surprised me with a congrats cake. I’m so emotional rn I can barely think. Life is just continuing to look up for me. I hate to sound all preachy but believe in your self and there’s nothing you can’t do. I’m doing this for my son. I’m doing this for my friends. I’m doing this for my whole family. A lot of people aren’t believing me and doubting I could be a part of something so big but we don’t entertain the haters. Shoutout to Tyler Perry, Disney, and especially Steve Harvey for making all this happen 🙌🏽
What I Thought of the Film
I have to admit, I was a little skeptical at first when they announced this project. I’m not the biggest fan of Tyler Perry, plus remakes usually end up being disappointing and often make you wish they could have left the original project alone without a mark on its legacy, but this time around the hype lived up to expectations. I think the turning point came when they brought on Chicago rapper “Lil Bibby” and were able to recreate this scene from the original.
The chemistry between Victor Pope Jr and Lil Bibby is undeniable throughout. It’s a coming of age film that not only makes you laugh, but makes you tear up at certain moments with it’s grasp on themes such as the brotherhood of men, death, and finding ones self. I give this film two thumbs up, and highly recommend it to anyone who gets nostalgic about Cadet Kelly from time to time. You can hear more about the film from this interview recorded last March.
